What exactly is the storyline of Spiral (2021)?
Detective Marv Bozwick follows a burglar into a sewage pipe during a Fourth of July celebration. Bozwick is attacked from behind by a pig-masked person and wakes up dangling by his tongue in a subway tunnel. A recorded message gives him a choice: cut off his tongue and survive, or wait until the next train comes and kill him. Bozwick gets slain when he can't escape the trap in time. Next day, Captain Angie Garza assigns Detective Zeke Banks idealistic rookie William Schenk. Banks and Schenk analyze Bozwick's death and find similarities to the Jigsaw Killer's method.
Meanwhile, a murder investigator called Fitch is kidnapped and put in a trap where he must pull his fingers off to prevent electrocution in a filling water basin; he too fails to escape and dies. Fitch had rejected a backup call from Banks some years earlier, almost killing him. Due of his relationship with Fitch, several police accuse Banks of being the perpetrator. The station then receives a parcel containing a pig puppet and a bit of Schenk's tattooed flesh. The police are directed to a butcher shop by a little vial within the box, which was once a hobby store where Banks and his father, retired chief Marcus Banks, would frequent. The squad finds a recording recorder and a skinned body identified as Schenk when they arrive. Marcus decides to seek out the murderer himself and visits a warehouse, where he is kidnapped. Garza is abducted and put in a trap in the cold storage of the precinct, where she must slice her spinal chord with a blade to prevent hot wax from running through a conduit over her face. She fails to do so, and when Banks finds her corpse, she dies from her injuries caused by the boiling hot wax.
Who played who in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)?
Tobin Bell, who played John Kramer/Jigsaw in all of the other Saw movies, didn't come back for this one. This makes Spiral (2021) the first movie in the series where neither Bell nor the Jigsaw character appear in person, only in photos. Bousman said that the killer in the movie is not the original Jigsaw, but a copycat, and that he doesn't plan to cast Bell in the famous role. Bell said he would like to come back as Jigsaw if the story went into Billy the Puppet's past.

Chris Rock pitched Spiral (2021) to Lionsgate as a chance to revitalize the Saw series and his own career.
Chris Rock met Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns at a friend's wedding in Brazil and thought shooting a horror film would be a fresh direction for his career. He wanted to integrate humorous aspects in the picture. Lionsgate was intrigued in Rock's notion to prolong the series. Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake said Rock's approach was respectful to the material while reinvigorating the brand with his humor, artistic vision, and enthusiasm for the iconic horror property. By January 2018, reports indicated Lionsgate was planning a ninth Saw picture without the Spierig Brothers. The filmmakers told Screen Rant that their picture set up sequels. Twisted Pictures was planning a sequel with Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger in April 2018.
After Jigsaw, Stolberg and Goldfinger pitched a new Saw film based only on John Kramer / Jigsaw to series veterans Mark Burg and Oren Koules, but Burg and Koules phoned the pair to advise them of Rock's plans for a new film, with Rock calling them soon after to explore his notion. Before Rock, several writers presented their ideas for the next Saw film to Lionsgate, but none of them succeeded. Stolberg and Goldfinger came up with eight versions of the picture before Rock fused his concept with theirs. Burg and Koules told them to throw Rock. Stolberg and Goldfinger's idea was accepted by Lionsgate and Rock, and their first draft was greenlit a week later. Rock rewrote Stolberg and Goldfinger's tale as needed.
Why did Tobin Bell not appear in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)?
On May 16, 2019, preproduction began. Former series director Darren Lynn Bousman directed, and Burg and Koules produced. Rock produced and wrote the narrative treatment.James Wan and Leigh Whannell, as well as Daniel Heffner, the original Saw creators, have joined Rock as executive producers. Scriptwriters Stolberg and Goldfinger have been confirmed.

Principal shooting started on July 8th, 2019 in Toronto, Ontario, under the working title of The Organ Donor, with Jordan Oram as cinematographer. It was reported that the picture will have the likes of Rock, Jackson, Minghella, and Nichols in its cast. In an interview with Variety, Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake said that the company believes Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock, as well as Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols, would make this picture stand out in the Saw canon, and that they couldn't wait to share this fresh, terrifying tale with fans. This was Saw taken to the next level in hyperdrive. During filming, Rock revised and reworked the opening sequence for his role. Trap-related scenes were deleted from the film because they were considered too gruesome, says Bousman.

Lionsgate announced on May 25, 2021, that Spiral would stream exclusively on Starz beginning October 8, 2021 in the United States. In copyright, Spiral: From the Book of Saw was available on VOD on 1 June 2021.
How much did Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) earn?
At 2,811 theaters, Spiral (2021) was expected to make $10–15 million in its first weekend, with competition from Those Who Wish Me Dead, Profile, and Finding You (all of which were also released in North America). At $3.7 million on its opening day, the picture underperformed expectations, falling short of its $9 million budget (including $750,000 from Thursday night previews). Although it topped the box office for the sixth time in the series, its opening weekend was the lowest in the series. A favorable reaction was more common on the East Coast of the United States, where 56% of the audience was male and 75% were under the age of 35. Despite a 48 percent decline to $4.6 million, it was still number one the following weekend.
Spiral (2021)'s efforts to shake up the series formula were hailed by reviewers, but it fell short of giving Saw the huge push it needed to reclaim its relevancy.
Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore awarded the picture an average grade of B- on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak claimed 63 percent of audience members gave it a good review, with 43 percent indicating they would definitely recommend it.
A separate reviewer said the writing caught the grizzled-cop-movie tone and created some memorable characters, but the plot was repetitive, the mystery was annoyingly foreseeable, and the inventive deaths were less imaginative than before. Spiral: From the Book of Saw traded entertainment value for respectability, but failed to accomplish either goal.
Others praised the performance and Spiral: From the Book of Saw's simple yet captivating idea, although some made criticisms of the voice actor's impression of Kermit the Frog in the role of the unknown assassin. They also noted how gruesome the gore and screaming scenes are for a real audience. They are, in fact, the enticement.
A film reviewer awarded the film one out of five stars and panned the climax, noting that it was hurried, half-assed, badly written, and, most importantly, becoming progressively uninteresting. He declared the game over at the completion of his review.
According to read... another film reviewer, "It's simply unreadable" because it lacks suspense, narrative, or movement in the storyline; he stated it disappointed him because of the high acclaim for the performers he'd given it.
However, another film reviewer enjoyed the opening sequence and concluded that the film's concept is either dishonest or fear-mongering at its worst. Similarly to Jigsaw, this film isn't as intelligent as it seems to be.
Reviewer This is Decker Shado's interpretation of Spiral. From the Book of Saw, and the mind of Chris Rock it's Spiral, the latest movie in the Saw franchise having come out late in 2021. After we got an entire Summer of Saw you should probably know the drill by now, a killer is on the loose who doesn't directly do in his prey, but rather tests them with mechanical contraptions as ingenious as they are disturbing. Or at least, that's the concept. A lot of these traps leave quite a bit to be desired... and the methodology is also a bit off, as is the goal. It's explained much better in his YouTube review.
Spiral (2021) received an unfavorable review from a film reviewer, who said that the film's fundamental enigma was handled without elegance or flair, or even much consideration. Strangely, even the death traps lack imagination. According to him, one of the most irritating aspects of Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is that behind all the foolishness there may be an even more entertaining and thought-provoking picture waiting to be made. There are far too many cuts to fast-paced action. The obnoxious yelling at full volume is irritating. For a Hollywood picture, Spiral has the potential to be both subversive and relevant, but the film is nearly infuriating in how little it appears to care about any of this. Its only goal is to bleed profusely, which it does.
Is there going to be a sequel to Spiral: From the Book of Saw?
Saw X, a sequel film, was revealed to be in production with Twisted Pictures in April 2021. However, Bousman remarked that the announcement was made too soon, which startled him and the film's producers. He said that simply because they produced Spiral (2021), the Saw series does not cease to exist. Just though Spiral (2021) has arrived does not rule out Saw IX. This is not the ninth installment in the Saw series. Jigsaw may easily be followed by Saw IX. I believe they're waiting to see how Spiral (2021) plays out and how viewers react to see what happens next. Josh Stolberg confirmed that the script was completed in December of that year.
In an April 2021 interview with Deadline Hollywood, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs said that Lionsgate TV is in early negotiations to produce a television series based on Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), with Mark Burg and Oren Koules' Twisted Television productions.
